New organisational structure for the Institute of Computational Science
Institutional Communication Service
10 years after its foundation, the USI Institute of Computational Science (ICS) has been given a new organisational structure, so to carry on and consolidate the important development that occurred from 2008 until today. With over 20 million research funds obtained so far, eight tenured professors and over 60 PhD students, researchers, and postdocs, the ICS has become one the major Institutes within USI research landscape, and in the field all over Switzerland. The new structure provides that ICS can benefit not only from the support of the Faculty of Informatics but also from the support of the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences and Economics, with which it has been carrying out a significant cooperation.
Thanks to this new synergy with more Faculties – also including the consolidated collaboration with the Cardiocentro Ticino with the Centre for Computational Medicine in Cardiology (CCMS) and implying the incorporation of the InterDisciplinary Institute of Data Science (IDIDS) – ICS will be able to strengthen its ongoing projects and develop new ones. The Institute is active in different areas of specialisation: computational science and engineering, computational medicine and life science, data science. In the field of machine learning and artificial intelligence, ICS cooperates with the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence Research (IDSIA).
ICS will keep managing the Master in Computational Science, which can now count on an international partnership agreement between USI, the Università degli Studi dell’Insubria (Department of Science and High Technology, Como) and the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany. Stronger thanks to the new partnerships, the Master will be able to offer students two specialisations: computational science and data science.
